[...] because, as you can hear, it just doesn't sound right [...] A wild theory: Maybe this was done on purpose to tune the module for the internal replay routine used in the demo? I.e. maybe the unaltered module sounded off when used in the demo and it was easier/quicker to edit the module than trying to fix the replay routines. Typically production of a demo is finished only at the demo party place where it it is meant to be released due to time constraints the demo groups face during production. Resaving a module won't magically fix a tune which sounds off, it's more likely that the module will take further damage when resaved using a different tracker.

Also, just for arguments sake, I saved the s3m out in several trackers/players including Milky, OMPT and MPP and an xm version, but funnily enough, each one is a diferent filesize... Different trackers usually will lead to different results, based on the level and quality of implementation for a certain format. You should try to resave a module in question with the same tracker and version it was created in. Loading the module with XMPlay reveals that it was created with Scream Tracker v.3.20 which is technically equivalent to v3.21 in terms of the module writing routines. I just checked both v3.20 and 3.21, the file size remains exactly the same like the one found in the XD demo.

erosion (fast mix).s3m is a modified Basehead module, edited by Dorsola (as is mentioned in the credits). In fact it has the patterns for the calm mellow sections of the original module removed, leaving only those in used for the fast paced action. We have another module from the game Unreal available on MODLAND which saw the same treatment by Dorsola: _ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/Screamtracker%203/Dorsola/shared%20dig,%20fast%20mix.s3m

PK = PKWare, a executable compressor for MsDOS binaries. There are several unpackers available which support this rather easy to unpack format either natively or by generic routines. The DOS expander by Daredevil & Tran = PmodeW. This extender supports compression of executables using the PmodeW expander. However compression was only optional and set to off by default. There exist unpackers for PmodeW execuatables too, both specific and generic ones.

This appears to be some predecessor format to AMF, and also developed by Otto Chrons. In the credits of the MAG it is referenced Zwerg Zwack. Obviously it didn't spread very much and no information is available anywhere.

To bad no such service like MODLAND exists. One would only need to look into the Fastttracker 2 folder and acquire it simply from there: _ftp://ftp.modland.com/pub/modules/Fasttracker%202/Cavell/my%20eden.xmAh well, but a man can dream, now can't he?

So, the important thing is it has a title? I think Asle already answered this quite precisely: As long as it is somehow possible to identify each music (and their authors) so as to prevent useless uploads because nobody would understand the file was there but named differently.
