A consistency questions :D
« on: June 02, 2013, 15:41:29 »
Hey there :D I visit amp already since quite a long time :D

While it is sad that it is not possible to download for example more then one file at once, you really have an truly amazing offer of Amiga Music on your Site :) Hopefully this Project still has a long future in front of it ;)

Anyway, here my question...

Since it is not possible to download more then one song at once i still prefer partly sources like Modland FTP or it's mirrors.

So.. How is it about File Consitency - I guess it is more recommended to download still from amp to make sure a file is really "100%" undamaged or i am wrong?

For example i have today compared the song Last Sunset.xm from Nighthawk from various sources with the one file from amp - Seems most of the sources have when calculating the same md5 checksum. Only the one from Amp is different.. So i wonder which files is the correct one, the one from amp or the ones from sources like Modarchive or Modland FTP ;)

Thanks :D

Greetings, Haslinger Roland, Austria

Hi and welcome to AMP...

This is the problem with a lot of modules out there and why there seems to be a lot of dupes/bad rips etc. (so to speak).  The Modland version (Last Sunset) is probably the one I sent there back in the day. I probably downloaded that version off Scene.Org.  <few seconds pass>.....  Mine and the one at Scene.org are the same size as I just checked it out.. That version was probably uploaded by Nighthawk himself, back whenever.....

The one on AMP may in fact be off some scene production and a slightly different filesize but exactly the same, song wise... especially if it was composed say at a party compo.  Modland version just maybe slightly tweaked after the compo before release.

I do add -long, -short, -alt to the end of the mods filename for these, if there's a noticeable difference during playback. But if a mod plays exactly the same, but just a few bytes filesize different, I just delete it. You could potentially have 3 or 4 versions of the exact same song else.... just with subtle differences...

I'm not saying that mine or Modland has the correct version or even Amp has the correct version. If they play exactly the same, why keep both?  If there are noticeable differences during playback think about it as an alternative version.

For .mod I use AMP as the yardstick, not so much for PC modules.  I can't really use Modland as a guide much as I sent most of my collection there years ago.  :)

AMP and Modland's versions are different, music wise. Many notes are not the same, which is the size difference that can be seen. As for the source, I can't trace it now. Sorry.
