Title: Top 10 Largest ProTracker modules ever made!
Post by: h0ffman on March 19, 2012, 13:06:36
Just curious about this one.  I thought my entry for Revision might possibly be one of the largest (1.2 meg) but it seems that a tune call 185 Amiga Acid is larger (around 1.3 meg)

So what are the largest protracker tunes ever made?

SELECT TOP 10 *
FROM Amp
WHERE Format = 'ProTracker'
ORDER BY FileSize DESC

Hi h0ffman. I also did a pt mod with 1,2 MB of size. Would be nice to know if mods exists >1,5 MB. Also if samples larger then 64k used.

Hey,

 As you know, AMP doesn't store real size, only compressed size. Still, might be relevant enough :)
 Here you go for AMP :)

Cheers

Compressed size doesn`t count. Real size please. :)

That LSD mod is 2.4mb. Didn't know protracker supported such large samples.

I like how he apologises for "big sizes" and a short version!!  8)

I'm not surprised, you'd be hard pushed to find an Amiga with more than 2 meg chip ram!
Title: Re: Top 10 Largest ProTracker modules ever made!
Post by: daxb on March 22, 2012, 22:07:20
Yep, Protracker eats some kb Chipram. So the max. size is below 2MB. Max. sample size is 128kb (you have to copy/paste in the editor).

The 128KB limit on ProTracker sample size is a rather more practical one: in the file format, sample size is stored in a 16 bit word, measured in words (so divided by two).  This gives a maximum of 65,535 words (or 131,070 bytes).  Anything larger physically can't be a ProTracker file.

Frikin ell. I never knew you could blag protracker to support samples larger than 64k!!!   I'm having that!!!
Title: Re: Top 10 Largest ProTracker modules ever made!
Post by: Asle on March 23, 2012, 22:01:38
well, in theory, you can stack up "nicely":
31 samples of 65534 bytes => 2.031.554 bytes
64 patterns => 65536
-> 2.097.090

Now, I don't think all Protracker version handle more than 64kb sized samples. I know some do, however, so, that doubles the pure sample size. Also, some protracker handle more than 64 individual patterns. In these cases, the absolute total is :
31 sample 131070 bytes => 4.063.170 bytes
128 patterns => 131072
header => 1084
-> 4.195.326 bytes

that's big :)

Oh, and we are not talking about the IFF-like version of mods, here ...

Asle, you should have been a teacher at school. I would have understood maths with you.  :)

Practical the max. file size (guessing ~1,8MB) is a bit lower because of PT code/gfx placed in chip-ram. :) However, thats all theory. So what is the largest mod - unpacked - on AMP? Wee still need to know. :P

Hey,

 You're of course all guessing the MOD would actually come from early Amiga, not talking about those PC tracking generating MODs as well.
 Anyway, I've run some script and have now all the ungzipped sizes. There's indeed some differences :)

We have 194 MODs (read protracker and the like - no STK), that have a size bigger than 1.000.000 bytes.

that was fun :)

I`ve launched my A1200 without S-S started PT2.3d and PT3.62. PT2.3d says 1966K free and PT3.62 says 1769K chip. So corona-part2 by Spacebrain -> 1.840.824 bytes should fit to load. Mods above 2MB should be playable with mod players that support fast-ram.

Do have someone experiences with PT on WinUAE? I read that you can set 8MB chip-ram on WinUAE. Recognizes/support PT the 8MB?

I did that, WinUAE with 8MB chip.
Loaded a lot of things, including workbench from where I launched pt2.3d
Here's a snapshot of the result.

Is there any PC tracker/player that could technically export a large module as a protracker mod file?

any of them, I guess (Fastracker, Screamtracker, Milky tracker or even PT4GUS :) )

Next question. :)

What's the most downloaded file (at the present time) on AMP?

It's very rare to find one which has had more than 1,000 downloads, and when you do it's always something tediously obvious (for example, I was just looking at Mantronix's page and Overload had 1,023 downloads).  Still, it'd be nice to know...

Well, we are reluctant to publish download results.
Long ago, we had a chart for that, and, automatically, any title listed there was being downloaded even more :).

Still, I guess a one time shot won't harm too much :). Will do that soon.

Cheers

Not really surprised by either list to be honest. Some great modules there, and the usual suspects for the authors. :)

Quite surprised by 9 & 10 though. Didn't have the semtex.mod but the Zalza one is quite catchy and both chiptunes as well...

Trans Atlantic at number 1?  Incredible!  Meanwhile Amegas languishes at number 8...

I would have said only Amegas and Cream of the Earth were the really obvious candidates for the list.  I've heard Trans Atlantic and it's a good song, but I'd never have considered it number 1 material...

Well, I kinda agree with you. However, don't forget that not all musics have the same age, storing wise. Some were available before others. Might explain the aforementioned ranking.
