Title: CD32 audio tracks
Post by: Asle on March 27, 2012, 21:55:20
All,

What do you think about adding CD32 audio tracks to AMP archives ?
Question raised recently which sounds valid, although, there might be some copyright issue.

 your thoughts ?

Is that game music or something else?

(You'll have to ignore my lack of knowledge here, but I haven't used an Amiga for nearly 20 years)...

It is indeed game music.
And don't worry, all questions are welcome :)

I'm not to bothered to be honest. Call me oldskool, but tracker modules are all i'm interested in.  But thats not to say that I don't see any reason not to preserve audio tracks.

What format would they be stored as?
How would one play them?

My real only concern is this, tracker modules have always been freely available since day one, for anybody to download and listen to. Sure some people don't want the modules available anymore, and thats fine.

Audio tracks I see as a more commercial/professional media, and not freely available for download like tracker modules are, and come under copyright, if that makes sense?

well, audio tracks could be stored as CDDA or OGG (like Exotica does).
AMP stores a lot of game music already, although all in tracked format. We have received some mails from authors but never about copyright issue.

the Amiga CD-32 is quite old (1993-1994). Check this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_CD-32
Many authors of audio tracks are already known here, for other tracked work.

I don't see a problem storing them, I prefer mp3 myself or just buy the CD....

I was hinting more about people/companies being a bit more bothered about audio tracks (from commercial products) rather than a tracked format being archived.

I mean, I don't understand how tracked music from commercial games is seen from the software company/artist point of view, and how they feel about the availability of their work on the Internet..  It's not really something thats been discussed that much, if at all, and it kinda has been taken for granted that tracked music is freely downloadable in general, whether its from the demoscene or a commercial release thats been ripped. (ie. Unreal, Age of Empires etc. etc.).

It has to be said that it goes both ways; I've played commercial games which were soundtracked with freely available music the authors probably got off a compilation somewhere.  I bet the composers never got any royalties!

As for audio tracks, I think that if AMP isn't prepared to host the 'exotic' formats such as TFMX, RJP, etc. then it definitely shouldn't be hosting OGG files.  Don't try and compete with UnExoticA; stick to what you're best at.  Since there's no way AMP would host any CDDAs which were not from a game of some kind (otherwise, where would you stop?!), there'd be a 100% overlap between the two sites.  Just stick to collecting tracker music from every source including, but not limited to, games, and AMP will still have a purpose.

Yep, you certainly got a point, here.
Although, even sticking to tracked material, where will this end :) Seems to be a lifetime research in itself :)
