Musician database / Dr q cumber or drq?
« on: July 26, 2011, 17:59:00 »
I noticed that AMP has just 3 mods by Dr Q-Cumber. I have a few more and quite a few compo entries by Drq. Both are the same person as he has a profile over @ MA.

Hello, I'm Thomas Andersson. A lot of people know me as drq, something I find quite humiliating.
Heatwave's the only "real" song here at the moment. It's very old, and whatever you do, don't download it. The rest are mostly 1 hour compo songs + two barwars biweekly entries (drq-ost.it and drq-smok.it). The XMs are old, the ITs are more recent.

I'll upload the others..

General Discussion / When is a mod not a mod?
« on: July 21, 2011, 20:40:43 »
This is aimed mainly at Asle or Deus-ex because this is on both AMP and Modland....

While looking for missing mods I came across Forever2.s3m by Basehead. The Modland one is under Forever2 (big version).s3m, both 1,365,111 bytes long.

This file is not really Forever2.s3m by Basehead. It is in fact

forever.s3m by basehead
the passage of time.s3m by ryan cramer
moonglow groove.s3m by daredevil

Remember years ago seeing something like this, probably the same file..

General Discussion / Unknown authors or modules
« on: June 01, 2011, 15:48:43 »
Sorry about the wall of text that follows!

After working my way through my collection and uploading some missing modules to AMP, I've now decided to turn my attention to my Unknown Modules directory, which tbh, has been long overdue I may add. At the moment, it currently contains 146 unknown modules (.mod) which have been sitting there, probably for at least 15 years or more!  :o

It has become apparent that this isn't going to be easy.  Just within the first dozen or so modules I looked at, I managed to find just 3 that could be identified and 1 a possibilty from the AMP database. There is a number of variables why this is so:

fakes
dupes
bad rips
naming conventions
the mists of time!  ;D
the list is endless...  :(

The 3 I have identified were obviously downloaded many years ago, or ripped (possibly by me or someone else), but with a bit of detective work, identified from this site. Back in the day, if I ripped something and I had no idea who the author was, I would name it from its group or production, at least it gives me something to look for, hence how I identified the 3 anyway.

I named one unk_arise minimum 1.mod, so looking for "minimum" on AMP reveals 34 mods with minimum in their title, mostly by Taron, who happens to be in Arise, fortunately, using the info (minimum1) button reveals that mine and yours is in fact the one I'm looking for. Good job I didn't have to look through all 34 to find it.  Was the same process for the other 2. I did notice that one of them had a credit in the AMP mod, whereas mine had the same sample text but not the credit, in this case, <soldier of eclipse>.  The 1 possibility one is, on AMP you have it in .med format while mine is in good ol' protracker format.

I've attached 3 modules to illustrate what a pain in the arse, trying to identify unknowns are!

AmigaTrek

Listed on AMP by Feanturi but in .med (octamed), mine is a protracker mod. no credits. Did he convert it to .mod or someone else ripped/converted it.

Adprod-music

Looks like a ripped mod by Gryzor and probably from his Mods Anthology collection.

Artemis or (c)1991 npd v2.0

No idea where this came from, maybe Mods Anthology again, no credits and no mod name as such.

The last two maybe already on AMP, under their proper mod names. No idea because I can't find them.

So, how do you lot identify and verify what is on AMP already and what is added in the future?

Is there a possiblity to add some extra functionality to the AMP search options? or some form of filtering for it?

Its a pity that some of the Info data couldn't be added to the module search results, like

samples used
number of patterns
patterns used

Filesize is irrelevant because the results return compressed size rather than uncompressed size, but even using the big modlist doesn't always help identify a mod if they don't match by a few bytes.

Or any other advice to making the job easier?

/end of wall of text!  ;)

Musician database / Gooroo & Goo-r00
« on: October 06, 2010, 18:48:40 »
This might be aimed more at Deus-ex than Asle or Crown.

I have several mods by Gooroo (Chris Egerter), all are either .it or .s3m.

I also have several (26) from a Goo-r00 (and several other variations of it), but all these are in .xm format.  Now I'm aware that there are a few on Modland, most probably uploaded by me.  This Goo-r00 was in N-zone, did a few co-ops with other members of N-zone I'm presuming, and I'm also presuming I downloaded these off the now defunct TiS back in the day.

Is this the same Gooroo or another Goo-r00 (lol), and does anyone have any info on these .xm modules or the artist?

Finally finished the S directory and found this one.  No idea where this one came from or why its named Maximum Overload, maybe ripped sometime ago from something and I named it from the production.

Requests / Identifying this mod
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:26:06 »
Modinfo attached.

Got a couple of mods called Silence-Part 1 & Part 2.  Both are not credited as such, but they do share some samples but thats about it.

Looking at sample31 text, maybe the author of both mods.  Does anyone recognise if "Ub@" as a possible nickname for these mods?

Musician database / Fairlight & another Fairlight
« on: August 27, 2010, 15:10:28 »
While going through some mods to re-catalogue my collection, I came across some .it mods by someone called Fairlight. Checking against whats on AMP, you can see you have Fairlight down as Marcus Hess (Germany). The "Grrrooovy Popcorn.it" is in-fact from another Fairlight...

Fairlight - Sylvain Martel (Canada)

You can grab his other modules from the Musique link on the page or MA.

For whatever reason, I'm in the process of having to re-catalogue all my mods again.

Does anyone know anything about Jens Jansson, who might also have gone by the nickname Platon?

I have 10 mods by this person, around 1998, mainly .xm & .it. Only asking bcoz I couldn't find his name on AMP.

Musician database / Another Jazz
« on: June 21, 2010, 12:31:12 »
I've recently come across a few chiptunes by Jazz/Real Dreams.

Had a quick search for Jazz and noticed you have 6 listed as that.  The mods I have are by a Marc Krupp from Hemsbunde.

Is anyone aware of this particular Jazz or maybe he goes by another alias?
