Was always fond of console games, and Atari and Colecovision were hot stuff back then. Spectrum ZX48 - gaming and some BASIC programming Commodore 64 - just gaming :) PC 386/25 - Gaming and "useful stuff" (art, writing). Scream Tracker I came out at around this time. In fact I started with music, but ended up with doing GFX here @ Remedy. Why? Because graphics artists get paid better (in most cases), and a lot of them are always needed, while most game houses only need one musician. It feels like there always are too many musicians. Scream Tracker, Scream Tracker III, Impulse Tracker. The latter one in particular lately. 'Catch That Goblin!!' won a contest and many people consider it a masterpiece. I haven't released any of those. However, my HDD is full of half- finished tunes that suck. They just have some cool ideas in them I might want to use in the future... It feels like music should rather be well chosen than well made. If the tune, its atmosphere and everything, fit the demo or game very well, then it doesn't matter that much how well it is done. In an opposite case, I've seen games / demos with technically excellent, well made music, which still felt boring because it didn't fit the whole. Only as a hobby. But I've managed to get a song into a couple of commercial uses. The first one is my 'The Occasion', which is on the Opportunity CD ( www.scoperecords.com ). The other one is a song I sold to Epic Games for use in Unreal Tournament. I have to admit that as I've done less trackin lately, I've also followed the scene much less. I could say "too much techno", but maybe that's just because I haven't checked out the situation l8ly. Starshine (Purple Motion), Mechanism 8 (Necros), Shadow of the Mind (Necros), Out Of Silence (Jogeir Liljedahl), in no order in particular. Plus I've left out an oodle of absolutely great tunes I just don't remember right now. And there is often a difference between technically great tunes, and tunes that aren't that great technically but which I still enjoy. Maybe sometime.... Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Tim Story, Erik Wollo, Philip Glass. Recently introduced to industrial. Titles like Cobalt 60, KMFDM, Front Line Assembly and Think About Mutation decorate my CD shelf. I wasn't a scene.dude before it fired off on the PC, when I joined Future Crew. Not really. Too much work to do. Use your imagination. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview is ©opyrighted in 2001 by crown of cryptoburners ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
