  • 1- How did your interest for computers start? Which year was that ?

  • My father initiated me with the programming in 1985. At this time, I was very
impressed by computers : I believed that they were really intelligent.

    ---> What's your name : Cyril

    ---> Hello Cyril !

I thought almost that it could become a friend! In fact it was just two lines
of code in basic : Input "What's your name";name$ / Print "Hello "+name$...

  • 2- What machines did you previously have? What did you do with them ?

  • I had an EXL 100 (an old french computer) on which I learned to program, two
or three Atari St/Ste (520/1040) for programming and musics, two or three
Amiga 500/1200 (I don't remember !) for mainly musics and gfxs (a little).
Next, I had a PC DX2 at 66 Mhz : I was insane to be able to compose in 32
channels ! I started to learn Lightwave 3D for real time 3D and computer
generated images (but I knew already Lightwave on Amiga). Today I work on
    PC workstations...

  • 3- For what specific reason did you end up making music rather than gfx, coding ?

  • I did not choose music in particular. I was very interested as much in music
as in the code and graphics. For the code, I did not continue because my
brother (Odin) quickly exceeded me ! He was born for the code! I have do many
musics on computers because I was passioned of demos and I began the piano
very early (at 5 years). I was always plunged in the music which is a great
passion. At the time of Atari and Amiga, it was the only domain on computer
in which I could express myself. I was not qualified yet enough in graphics.
But today, I make much more graphics than musics as a professionels (although
I have a diploma of classical piano teacher)

  • 4- Which composing programs have you been using? Which one in particular ?

  • Nothing very original : Protracker/Fastracker/Modplug. I have done the majority
of my musics demos under Fastracker.

  • 5- With which module did you feel you had reached your goal ?

  • Mmmh, none. I'm proud of Worlds/Evolution/Dimension but there are many defects
(low quality samples, many awkwardnesses...) The modules always were to divert
me, I never worked enormously on it.

  • 6- Is there a tune you would like not to remember ? For what reason ?

  • None, I am not ashamed of what I have make, same poor modules...

  • 7- In your opinion, what's the value of a music in a demo, game ?

  • In my opinion, music is as significant as the visual and much more as the code.
With the image, it is it which will bring the dynamism to a production,
atmosphere, emotions... Music in a product is the sister of the image, they
should be thought of pairs. I cannot conceive an image which is not synchronized
with the music. The music is the heart of a demo, game or film! And it is one
of the reasons for which I stopped making musics for demos and that I chose of
the already existing musics since Incoming Future on PC. Many sceners did not
understand my step and reproached me to not preserve the "demo spirit" by
    "ripping" film musics (Incoming Future/Toys).

I am explaining: First, I never "ripped" musics since I always mark the
references in contrary to much of musicians and graphicians on the scene
(I love Boris Vallejo :)) who do not have cold eyes... :[

Secondly, the music has an importance such for me that to emphasize a
demo, it is necessary to give him the best, and then... ...not module!
Toys would not be Toys without the music of Stephen Flaherty (Anastasia).
What counts is the final atmosphere's rendering! I even wrote to Don Bluth
to which this demo is dedicated !

To compose a real orchestral music with true orchestra and truths choruses,
it's too expensive and would take far too much time to be used in a simple
demo. For electronical music like techno, module,XM or IT are very good but
not for symphonic (Cubase rules)... If Toys 2 comes out one day, I will use
ONLY film musics too. In video games, the musics are in my opinion still
very poor except Outcast (symphonical orchestra of Moscow), the Nomad Soul
(David Bowie), and Blizzard entertainment which mixes fake orchestral sounds
with truths choruses recorded (Warcraft 3). I work in this way...

  • 8- At present, are you still composing? For professional or leisure purposes ?

  • Yes, I still composing but only for professional purposes (games, films).

  • 9- What do you think of today's pieces of music such as mpeg,wave,midi,etc... ?

  • Excellent ! It's necessary to evolve and to use all the possible means to be
    expressed. Only the result counts...

  • 10- Could you tell us some of your all times favourite tunes ?

  • My favorite tunes are "Excellate" by Probe / "Lech demo" by Beethoven /
"Enigma" by Tip&Mantronix / "Desert Dream" by Laxity.. And much of musics
of Xtd, Jogeir, Heatbeat, Dizzy, Jester...

  • 11- Are you planning to make an audio cd with some of your music remastered ?

  • I have the project to make a professional CD musics with musicians of the
scene, but I cannot say more at the moment...

  • 12- What bands are you currently listenning to ?

  • I'm listenning a lot of electronical music (Astral project, Chakra, Chemical
brothers...), but especially classical musics (Liszt&Cziffra rulez !), film
music (John Williams, David Arnold, James Horner, Danny Elfman...) and Jazz
(Peterson, Michel Camilo, Chick Corea...) and I forgot ... NECTARINE RADIO !

  • 13- What does/did the amiga/c64 scene give you ?

  • It learned how me to work with little means and to learn the technical bases.
It also learned how to me to be very patient, and quite simply, a computer culture
that the today's young generation do not have anymore: they always knew the PC
at 1 GHZ to make some "Word" stuff !

  • 14- Are you still active in the scene these days ?

  • I always like the demo and does not want to stop, but I do not have any more
time in this moment. I hope that Toys 2 or the Action demos (two old projects)
will be able to come out one day. But I do not want to make a "small" demo,
I want always make a big show.

  • 15- Anyone to greet ? Anything left to say ? Feel free...

  • All members of Gods and specialy Odin, Zerox (thanks to have found my old
    modules !), Bridgeclaw, Chris, Ghandy...
    to Soni : GODZIlla !
to Fabrice : chui à la Ramaaasse !!
to Yes : Continuez comme ca les gars ! Nectarine est génial !
to Jogeir : thanks for all.

Harry Potter musics are the best never made ! Thanks Johny !
Only French Touch can do Amélie Poulain !
