  • 1-How did your interest for computers start? Which year was that?

  • Oh. It was year 1994. Before that mark I had no interest in computers at
    all. It started when parents had bought me ZX-Spectrum. Dead in the rest
    of the world, in Russia Spectrum gained extra popularity that time due to
    its small price, big amount of software and simplicity of the scheme which
    could be built by many radiotricians.

    And after that it started. Studying BASIC, assembler, learning how to
    use tracker ("Sound Tracker", that was it name)


  • 2-What machines did you previously have? What did you do with them?

  • As I said, I had ZX-Spectrum 128K. My interests were quite broad, covering
    programming, music writing, gaming (a bit, Spectrum is quite bad for games
    :), hacking (a little bit).


  • 3-For what specific reason did you end up making music rather than gfx, coding?

  • In "real life" I'm a computer science student. But I always felt it
    couldn't be my only occupation. Well, I have two "passions" in me: one
    passion is to the world of art, music, books, i.e. world of culture,
    another passion is to the world of computers. Somehow they manage to get
    with each other well.


  • 4-Which composing programs have you been using? Which one in particular?

  • In chronoligical order, on PC:

    1. Fast Tracker. For about a half of a year.
    2. Impulse Tracker.
    3. ModPlugTracker.
    4. Psycle.

    Now I would prefer Psycle for electronic music, and ModPlugTracker for
    more traditional styles.


  • 5-With which module did you feel you had reached your goal?

  • Well, listen to "Never be" on www.mp3.com/iliks
    This is a smooth instrumental ballad which goes from bright to deep
    sorrowful and soul-tearing mood.


  • 6-Is there a tune you would like not to remember? For what reason?

  • Probably no. I write music only in good mood, so they all do bring some
    good memories for me.


  • 7-In your opinion, what's the value of a music in a demo, game?

  • Maybe my opinion will be cliche-like, but I think the goal of music in
    film, demo is to complement on-screen action. The talent of such a
    composer is measured in how good he is at fitting his music to the visual
    images. Though I must add such music differs greatly from regular music.
    Music in demos/movies/games is generally less bright and catchy, while
    musician at his solo work could create more interesting things. Just my
    opinion.


  • 8-At present, are you still composing? For professional or leisure purposes?

  • Yes. Now I'm doing only mp3 because I don't want to my music to sound like
    a cheap cassete player. Yeah, music content is the main part, but sound
    quality also counts.
    I compose music only for pleasure.


  • 9-What do you think of today's pieces of music such as mpeg,wave,midi,etc...?

  • mp3. Great. I don't understand all the fuss which was in 98-99 about demos
    using mp3s. People, mp3 playback eats only ~6% of CPU time on my Celeron
    333. And we are getting professional quality sound, with good mixing etc.
    While playback of a GOOD module in realitme could take up to 50% of CPU,
    if not more. And another disadvantage of modules - cpu load depends on the
    moment of music. I mean in place where a small number of instruments plays cpu
    load will be low, in other places it will be high. mp3s have constant
    load.
    Of course you always could use 8-bit 4-channel modules (and
    there's nothing wrong in it, I like old music too), but nowadays it would
    sound quite minimalistic, wouldn't it?


  • 10-Could you tell us some of your all times favourite tunes?

  • Purple Motion/Scaven/Necros-mania didn't catch me. I liked more
    traditional music, such as: Acumen, Chavez, Mick Rippon, Quasian,
    Warder, ...


  • 11-Are you planning to make an audio cd with some of your music remastered?

  • Well, I suppose everybody plans to do this some time :)


  • 12-What bands are you currently listenning to?

  • Nightwish, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, ...


  • 13-What does/did the amiga/c64 scene give you?

  • Nothing. I never had amiga or c64 - they were very rare in Russia. Though
    of course I know them thanks to the emulators.


  • 14-Are you still active in the scene these days?

  • Yes. I write articles in Hugi magazine.


  • 15-Anyone to greet? Anything left to say? Feel free...
