My uncle bought a Sinclair ZX spectrum. I often spent my vacations with him because of that. One day I had the opprtunity to buy a used C64 from a friend, and suddenly I was a computer owner. It was not until the Amiga that I started making music though! Early on I saw an Amiga hooked up to a HiFi stereo. I just had to have that machine... This was 1990-1991 I think. As mentioned above: C64 was used for games, though I was very interested in music disks etc. Amiga opened my eyes to music making. Today I have a PC, which is also used for music (on occations :-) I actually did a lot of graphics in the beginning, but I soon discovered that I had a talent for making music. I have always been multi talented though, and today I make all kinds of stuff in my job as game designer/ project manager/ head of development. I make music/SFX, 2D graphics, 3D ingame models, story writing, scripting, level design, conceptual design etc. On the Amiga I alway used the trackers. Soundtracker 1.1 and working my way up to Protracker. Today I work on the PC using Logic Audio gold. Huh... I can't really remember. I don't think I ever had a goal. I never had one particular style, or on particular way to make music. I was not trying to perfect any specific flow or mood. I just followed my intuition. I was constantly experimenting (which is also why some of my mods are really strange :-) But of course I would say that my later modules are the best. But that conclusion is mostly based on a "craftmans" impression of the pieces. Today I think it is all lost to me. I mean all the hype about who was the best and who was a "lamer". I feel a warmth whenever I hear something from those days, even if it is one of my older mods. It all depends on the game. Most games need soundeffects to be "alive", but the music is a different story. For demos it is absolutely essential (as there are no SFX). But more imortantly is how you time the demo to the music. I remember some of the Polka Brothers demos. They were not really that amazing if you looked at the code, but the music and timing made them rock. Right now I am no longer composing for games. Today I make some occational techno funkadelic stuff, which is released by the label "Hypnotic Records". I have done some music for 3-5 software titles in the past. I see WAV and MIDI as musicians tool. MP3 on the other hand is more like a digital tape recorder for people who like to make pirate copies. Hmm, I am more or less blank. I was never one to listen to music... I only created it (don't ask me why). I really liked artists though: Heatbeat, Romeo Knight, Uncle Tom, TIP&Mantronix, Bruno and Jesper Kyd. Huh, NO. I have never thought of that, but I do not think my music would survive a remastering. Radio Head, Vangelis, Sting, Chemical Brothers, George Michael, Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode, Madonna, Prodigy, Nine Inch Nails. It gave me a lot of good friends. It taught me a lot about how people react when they want something really bad, or how groups of people can work together really hard to achieve a greater goal. It taught me to handle critisism, and how to tolerate sleeping on a cold hard stone floor (with no sleeping bag). Only to keep in contact with my friends from those days. Actually we are having a big Christmas dinner this year, wher people from Static Bytes, Polka Brothers, Kefrens, Melon, Anarchy and others will attend. Hi goes to (though I hardly think they will see this): Tivurr, Playboy, Quackbuster, Slammer, Easly, Pixie, Estrup, Buck, Slide, Gargoyle, Hithansen, Mount,... and all my other friends out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview is ©opyrighted in 2001 by crown of cryptoburners ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
