It was 1984 and I already was 20 years old and never touched a computer before that. On C64 I played games first. Also tried to make programs, first in basic, then in assembler. Always wanted to write a music-editor. And always wanted to write a game on my own. But the latter was too hard for me then :) After I got a sequencer-program and a midi-interface I started to do some midi-home-recording, even tried to sing along. Much fun! Well I did coding more than music in the last years. But recently I simply don't have enough time for programming in earnest. So I canceled all my unfinished game-projects and concentrated more on having some fun with these little tunes you can finish in one or two days and then you are done with them. On C64 I used the very impressive Soundmonitor by Chris Huelsbeck and my not very impressing own editor before that. On Amiga I started with Soundtracker, Noisetracker and Protracker. Eventually I found MED the best choice for doing game-music for my own projects. And recently I was swept away by this THX-AHX-editor from Pink&Dexter, which is now my favorite thing. My goals are not so very high and so I reach them very often :) My personal most favorite tunes are: go_music.sid mod.song_for_tto mod.musangala mod.fast_lap and virtually all other tunes of mine :) at least I like them all Well, yes, of course there are some who sound bad, are composed bad and are boring. I don't remember them very well :) Music in a game always adds to the fun I think. At least in most cases. If it supports the atmosphere and the mood of the current action then it's always great to have it. Also in a demo. Music for these two kind of appearances don't have to be so brilliant because they don`t stand on their own. If I listen to music without playing a game or watching breathtaking demos, it's much harder to satisfy me. Then it has to sound good, have one or more good tunes and what is most important for me, it has to change and variate much to become not boring. I am composing these days more than I did the last years. But never did sell anything. I am not very up to date, almost didn't notice what new techniques there are now already. MPEG? Yes I think I heard a few :) But the music doesn't get better. Only the sounds improve. But if the music and the ideas are good, then of course I also welcome the good sound! Commando.sid : I visited a friend of mine who showed me a new game on the C64 and it was Commando. And we never played it for real but only listened to the music. He said:"It's magic. It's sounding so good and it never repeats. It goes on and on and changes all the time". We were very impressed. In those days we thought Rob Hubbard was kind of a demigod :) The same with "The last V8" : First you here the speechsynthesis: "V8, return to base immediately" and then this brilliant song comes in. I am not sure if something on the amiga ever touched me this way again. Am I too old or what? I just started to record all of my cassette-recordings to CD. Much work :) But I rather work on new tunes than on old and 'finished' pieces. Genesis with Peter Gabriel (Selling England by the pound) Oldies but goldies. I never was part of the scene for real. Not on the C64 and not on the amiga. But in the last years I got some nice email-contacts. The scene itself was always admired by me. I read some of the mags, watched many demos and listened to a lot of mods. Did not always understand everything though :) Just write one or two emails per day. But I am not sure who is really part of the scene. I myself am not 'in the scene'. I'm a lamer :) Would like to get to know more musicians that join the AmigaModTeam. Still seems to me a good idea to see what happens if someone works on my tunes and I work on tunes of others.
