Date of birth: 1984, my parents bought a commodore 64... 1987 saw my first demos (from a teenage babysitter!) C-64/C-64C, i mainly played games. didn't really use computers from 1989-1992, then had my first PC, an old 8088 mainly for BBSing. 1993 I got a 486 and sometime around then a friend gave me his old Amiga 500 as well. On the 486 is when i made all my modules (sbpro and later GUS). I have no artistic talent and though i program some now it didn't "stick" at the time... plus i was a musician before i really used a computer much (piano). In the old old days (1993) i used KingMod.. it was a "staff and notes" tracker, the only one ever made I think. It was bad but since i knew sheet music it helped me get into it. I used that until early '94 when ST3 came out. Then switched to Impulse Tracker for more channels eventually (1996?). Nowadays i use Nuendo. None.. I guess the one bit of pride I do feel is that if i go back and listen to some of those songs made in 1995-1997, no one was doing things in those genres really at the time in tracker music.. things influenced by Ninja Tune and Coldcut, etc. I think those mods have much more in common with music made today, so I guess maybe they were a bit forward-thinking. But in general its hard to listen to them because of the 8bit/22khz samples. Some music sounds good with that quality but not mine! Since I was ripping from CDs and what-not.. My first 20 or 25 songs are painfully bad.. and they ended up on the internet somehow! Not sure how since I didn't release them.. In a demo I think it's 50% of the impact of it. In a game it's just wallpaper I think. The reality is most people don't even listen to game music while playing a game anymore. I haven't done anything for a couple years. I used to do production music (tv/radio) for my job but not anymore. I still keep up a 'studio' but never get to use it.. sadly.. I don't follow netlabels and such.. i do listen to music though of course. sure.. off the top of my head here's the ones that affected me most.. not necessarily my favorite from these artists, but the ones that 'shaped' my enjoyment of mods.. i don't want to write a book so i won't say what they mean to me individually but.. they mean a LOT. audiomonster - nebulos dizzy - pathway bit arts - wasteland greg - odyssey-part2 nhp&bkh - ethnomagic codex - undersea delorean - starfields groo - biomechanoid heatbeat - annika dr. awesome - godzilla jester - my glamorous life lizardking - varanen purple motion - darkness nuke - menumusic.3 radix - sunjammer SLL - dragon jive sidewinder - advent travolta - condom corruption vinnie - bangin' cindy c.c.catch - amnesia demo nope.. wolf parade, sunset rubdown, tough alliance, joanna newsom, jermaine stewart, yellow magic orchestra, prefuse 73, gang gang dance, yo la tengo, destroyer my musical inspiration for years.. somewhat recently (3-4 years ago) doing some demo tracks but not other than that sorry to all the people i lost touch with.. don't want to greet cuz there'd be too many.. mostly want to say that i miss the old days because of how exciting it was to be on the forefront of technology as the internet was becoming a big thing.. we take it all for granted nowadays! but i remember when talking live to someone in another country about MODs, seemed like a miracle... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview was kindly sent by Basehead in 2009 to Asle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
