  • 1-How did your interest for computers start? Which year was that?

  • For people that want to know, my name is Jean-Philippe Plazas.
I don't know if i should mention my Excel 100 from Excel Vision..
But i think i had my first Amiga 600 in fall 1992, when my neighbor
was tired of me going to his place to play 'Another World'.

  • 2-What machines did you previously have? What did you do with them?

  • As i (shouldn't have) mentioned before, my first computer was an Excel 100.
It was pretty useless, so i was just copying some basic code lines
from a book to play ridiculous games.

  • 3-For what specific reason did you end up making music rather than gfx, coding?

  • I think it's when i met Gandbox at Micropus (grand rue henry barbusse)in 1993.
It was a computer store where Gandbox used to live. I went there and i asked
for some new programs on amiga. Then he was like 'no, you don't wanna buy
anything, check this out'. There, he played 'Introtechno', his brand new module
on protracker. That how i discovered the fantastic world of demos!

  • 4-Which composing programs have you been using? Which one in particular?

  • Protracker 2.3b - I have no clue about any other existing programs.

  • 5-With which module did you feel you had reached your goal?

  • None of them. I feel like all of them are just some bad tries.
Depends on which goal you're talking about though. When you see
yourself charted number 20 out of 20 in a music competition, it
feels really good! And i'm serious, doh and i were spending our time
composing music that we would be quite sure that the public of demo parties
wouldn't understand. Maybe it was a way for us to slowly cut the umbilical
    cord with the scene!

  • 6-Is there a tune you would like not to remember? For What reason?

  • No, i really don't wanna think about it now (i have a note from my
    psychiatrist)

  • 7-In your opinion, what's the value of a music in a demo, game?

  • As any kind of creation, it depends on the project. They can decide that the
music is just gonna be a background (an illustration of the visuals); as
important as the visuals; or even more important (like a music video).
For a game it's different. I think it puts the atmosphere of the game,
like the graphics.. Except that you can still play a game without music!

  • 8-At present, are you still composing? For professional or leisure purposes?

  • I'm still composing. It's actually my main activity. I've been studying for 4
years the electroacoustic composition at the national music school of perpignan,
with Denis Dufour as a master. Since, i perform my creations in traditional
acousmatic concert spaces, create sound installations for art galleries, or
    performances with other composers.

  • 9-What do you think of today's pieces of music such as mpeg,wave,midi,etc...?

  • Well, wave and midi are almost the only way to compose professional music. I
mean, even if you're a rock band, you're probably gonna want to be recorded
in wave, using midi drums, etc... I used to dream about a world where you
could hear Heatbeat's chip tunes on the radio, and see Doh performing Happy
to gaze her at 'Fan de', the teenage show on tv..

  • 10-Could you tell us some of your all times favourite tunes?

  • Listening to the finnish scene has been my best school! It's gonna be hard to
    pick up some!

    Heatbeat : 11 notes on sand / Moontimer / Move-ment-al / Nowhere whenever
/ Seikailumies / Solar plexus / Tuomiomies / UUdenkuun Sointumaa

    Groo : Abiturientti / Banana and heaven / Hoppin'leonar / Jenny
    / Kommunikaatio / Oolah

    Dizzy : Camomile / Citronative / Coltris / Suomalainen Kaupunki / Syksy
    /synkronointiongelma

Doh : Alive / Cyber Gilbert / Egometriosporasie? / gnaule / happy 2 gaze her
    / J'aimalamatroizess / missing you / oktafonik yannick / qu'as-tu fait
    pour m'oublier?

    Gandbox : battleship3 :) / chico de loros / introtechno / loony picato
    / lombere entilope / milo mistake ...

Vim : at tesko this week / erotic tic errors / experimental(u) /
    i'm [ou]there[but] / neut-.orange / the greeting inside

Sorry for this long list, i had too ! :)

  • 11-Are you planning to make an audio cd with some of your music remastered?

  • No, not with my amiga musics.
Go to www.tv106.com for release news.

  • 12-What bands are you currently listenning to?

  • Electroacoustic composers, electronic, contemporary, improvisation ..

  • 13-What does/did the amiga/c64 scene give you?

  • It made me focus on my creativity and gave me some skills. If i didn't buy
this freakin amiga i would probably be still at college, or selling some
    vaccuum cleaners in Bali.

  • 14-Are you still active in the scene these days?

  • No. But at the time of the last meeting of dreamdealers in St Tropez (french
riviera), we came to the conclusion that there was probably the possibility
to think about the idea of making a demo within the next 20 years.

  • 15-Anyone to greet? Anything left to say? Feel free...

  • Thank you
