I only got a Thomson TO8d "for educational use".. So first was the TO8d but I only played "Arkanoid" and "Sorcery", and wrote some lines in BASIC. I hated my neighbour and his Amstrad CPC ! So, one year later, i got an Atari 1040 STf for Christmas, as a revenge to my neighbour. I played "Dungeon Master" mostly and learnt GFA Basic. But I hated my cousin and his Amiga 500 ! So, I bought a classic Amiga 1200 with 420 Mbytes HD in 1992, as a revenge... And finally, I'm using my actual PC for browsing, chatting, composing music, painting, gaming (of course). By the way, I don't hate my neighbour and my cousin anymore :) My first interest were gfx. I'm still drawing and painting with my Wacom. I learnt piano for 2 years at 11, but I discovered computer music with a friend at 15. I was playing some music i had invented with my Yamaha keyboards and he told me about a program called "Quartet". This was probably the first computer-music thing I've ever seen, but it wasn't really a tracker program : there wasn't any pattern, any effect, just notes, keys, mesures like in a real partition and some loop limits. I hardly composed a music for my friend's crackgroup and they loved it ! I entered the demoscene in 1992, as a musician, and when I watch some crap in graphics competition entries... I started with the PLAY command on my Thomson :) Then, I tried Quartet on Atari for 2 songs : very clean sound but the playroutine was using all cpu time! Then came Equinox tracker, and Protracker ST which had more effects. Finally, I used Protracker 2.3d on Amiga for a lot of years (i just hate the 3.xx versions) and Fasttracker 2 on PC i'm still using now. As I'm never satisfied by a music, it takes me loooong hours to compose. In and released it only in 2001, and because I kept the old samples, I called it "Ripper's revenge" ! :) For multichannel modules, I don't think I've reached my goal : I'm working on something called "The Pure Chase" that won't be released before a long time ! :) I really hate my jungle tunes like "Life on Mars" or the two "Mama Jungle". I respect all demo musicians, so i don't like when you hear some commercial stuff in a demo... And of course, a demo without music is nothing but a boring benchmark : yeap, i know musician has less work in a group, but (s)he's essential ! (super classique comme opinion hein) There are a few games I like, and I remember a game most of the time because of its music (Goldrunner or Wings of Death on the Atari, Xenon 2 or Stardust on the Amiga, Unreal on PC...). Just for fun. Anyway, I'm not composing a lot at the time.. Mp3 is the best format for demo music : Xm, It or Mod are "work in progress" formats. I think also that Midi music is made for -real- musicians, i mean people who are playing -real- instruments. I'm not a classic musician, so I really can't understand anything in midi music.. There are plenty of, but here are some i remember at the moment : Oro Incenso (Jogeir), Onward (Jugi) or Prehistoric Tale (Mad Max) for melody. BST (Bruno), Living insanity (Moby) or anything from Dizzy for technique. Fables about Cars (Dreamer), Groovin Malon (Traven) for fun. Cyberride (Jester) for... i don't know why ! :) I've already done it, only for my haircutter (true!) :) Jamiroquai, Incognito, Daft Punk.. Friends ! and some goodies too :) Yep, but not very active. I'm getting old ;) Not a funny thing, but I see demoparties disappearing year after year, real sceners getting older, good demos being so rare. Don't try to do what you see in games cinematics... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview is ©opyrighted in 2002 by crown of cryptoburners ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
