Interview

    Handle: Ritchy

Group: Analog, Spider, Paranoimia, Alliance Design, ...

Date of birth: july the 8th, 1972

  • 1-How did your interest for computers start? Which year was that?

  • In 1980 I think, my grand father (Jean Guyon) had a Tandy TRS-80 computer. He
coded "live" a program for me that asked your date of birth and calculated
your age. It was amazing ! I was 8 and this day I knew that I wanted to
    program computers !

  • 2-What machines did you previously have? What did you do with them?

  • First I had Sinclair ZX-81. I coded (in basic) some text-animations, scrollings,
and "graphical" stupid things. The Zx-81 had no sound but I made a piano
program that generates sounds when you press its keys ! (you had to increase
your TV at full volume to hear the sounds). You can contact me if you want to
know the explanation ;-) Of course I played with this computer, too.

Then I had an Amstrad PC1512 computer. I always coded in basic, but tried
other languages like Prolog. I made some little games. When I had my Amiga 500,
I tried graphics (Deluxe Paint), Music (soundtracker) and assembler (Seka). So
I started some little demos alone, then reached some little groups, ...

Later I had a A1200, and a PC. But the funnyiest computer was the A500.

  • 3-For what specific reason did you end up making music rather than gfx, coding?

  • I made musics AND coded. But I was "known" as a coder.

  • 4-Which composing programs have you been using? Which one in particular?

  • I tried all the Soundtracker versions (startrekker, protracker...). It's so
easy to compose with it ! I used midi software on my PC (Midisoft Studio) but
    it's not very fun.

  • 5-With which module did you feel you had reached your goal?

  • none. I love some of them, but it's more an experimental music that "good music".

  • 6-Is there a tune you would like not to remember? For what reason?

  • no, I love my first bad tunes. I can see the evolution of my style.

  • 7-In your opinion, what's the value of a music in a demo, game?

  • It's as important as the design, the code, the graphics, and the animation. No
more, no less. It has to be adapted to the situation.

  • 8-At present, are you still composing? For professional or leisure purposes?

  • Not very often, only for my pleasure.

  • 9-What do you think of today's pieces of music such as mpeg,wave,midi,etc...?

  • I'm very happy to have all my CDs into my computer (Mp3), I can hear all of
them in random mode. But I buy all the musical CD I love ;-)

  • 10-Could you tell us some of your all times favourite tunes?

  • The musics from Gladiator in the IT Megademo. I was really impressed. Some old
tunes like Dear Rob, Axel F, Echoing, Heavy but cool, The Last Star, v42...
Living in a dream (Jogeir), Golden Years (Moby), Epsonic (Nhp&Bkh), Ba1 (Red
Sector), Music of the demo DOPE, Klisje paa klije (Walkman), Whistling Fred
(Mel o'dee/Shadows), China (Phenomena), Most to vocal (Maniacs of noise),
Hideaway blues (Chorus and Sid), Nebulos (Audiomonster)...

  • 11-Are you planning to make an audio cd with some of your music remastered?

  • no, now I'm a coder in a French video game company.

  • 12-What bands are you currently listenning to?

  • The Band ?!

  • 13-What does/did the amiga/c64 scene give you?

  • Lot of fun !!!

  • 14-Are you still active in the scene these days?

  • No (maybe a revival one day ?)

  • 15-Anyone to greet? Anything left to say? Feel free...
  • Hello to Erekosë, Monty, Kamikaze, Speedman and all the others I know. Feel
free to write something in my book on my website. Sorry for my English, I'm
    French ;-)
