Until that I hadn't been that interested in computers, save for the then-'mindblowing' computer games on El Loco's old but kewl Shark computer in the mid 80s. :) Quite frankly I didn't have any previous machines until I got my Amiga, so the last part of the question I can't answer you. :-) The specific reason for me ending up making music was of two things, actually. First, I had played real instruments since the age of 7 (primarily the organ), and so when that in mind, it felt quite naturally to give it a try on the computer as well. I've never had any interest in coding, and I know I'd do quite poorly if I were given access to paintbrush or doing any gfx. :) Second, I owe El Loco a big one for his ongoing pushes about talking me into giving computerized music a try, since I actually hardly did give it any interest in the first place. Since I regard myself as well retired from the Amiga composing, the programs I've been using have belonged to that era: To begin with I used Soundtracker, then came Noisetracker. But in the latter years of my composing I utilized Protracker, which was among the better trackers around at that time. Hard to say, really. From a personal view I would probably go with the song "Decibel Overload", merely because we (El Loco and I) captured the 10th spot in the music competition at The Gathering 1994 with it. That aside, I also have to mention the song "Talentiaden", used in the intro with the same name. That one is one of my own favourites, as I think it nicely combines different tempo with a strong melodic style. I'm quite pleased with the strong melodic lines in this song; a style we have tried to preserve and be faithful to in our music. Oh God, there sure are several tunes I would like to forget as quickly as possible. :) Luckily they never saw public daylight, and they never would have deserved it anyway. They were way too weak in every aspect of categories of composing. I think the music is all important as well in a demo as in a game. Music sets the mood and the feeling in any production, amplifies it, and adds design to the gfx and code. What would "Star Wars" have been without John Williams' brilliant musical scores? NOTHING, I guess. Yes, I'm still composing. I do mainly compose on my synthziser and when I go home to my parents, I still try to play the organ as well. It has been quite a while though since last time I considered myself having made a brand new composition. Nowadays I do my composing strictly for leisure purposes. Presently, I don't have the fitting equipment nor the occasion to consider composing for professional purposes, even if I fully admit that doing something like that is an old long-lived dream of mine. I'm ok with it. Especially the mp3 (mpeg) format sounds intriguing. Geez, that's a tough one... From the Amiga music scene I would have to mention the fab music of Bjørn Lynne ("Dr. Awesome"), who really was a strong force of inspiration to us, and most surely to literally all the amiga musicians of that time. His memorable opening part of "Now What II" in my opinion is one of the best technical pieces of music written on Amiga. I'm also a sucker for the songs made by his musician partner in Crusaders, Fleshbrain (Seppo Hurme). The best tune every to have been written on an Amiga, however are, according to me, the immortal piece called "Garbage Collection" by Peter/PMC. Shortly I also have to mention Scott/Spaceballs and his smaller pieces of music, which has had a lot of influence on the shapening of my very own melodic style of music. No, I'm not. The idea is very appealing though. However, I cannot see that becoming a reality within the near future, really. Nevertheless, I'd like to see it happen some day. I'm listening to many bands, all versatile in musical style, ranging from dance and techno (the band Prodigy here being the favourite), to straight pop & rock and back to ethnicial inspired music/folk music (bands like Enigma and norwegian band Bel Canto). "God Is a DJ" by Faithless is a fav of mine nowadays. I love the songs of U2, especially the song "With Or Without You" + songs like "I Don't Want Control Of You" (Teenage Fanclub) and "1979" (Smashing Pumpkins), and a lot more. It would impossible to list up all of them here. The Amiga Scene gave much fun to me. I will remember the hard rivalry between the groups the most, but I'll remember it in the most positive sense of the word. I guess for me personally The Gathering '94 attendance in Bærum, Norway, with no doubt represented the highlight moment of my scene 'career'. No, I look upon myself as retired member of the scene, really, as I have done nothing relative to the Amiga Scene since around 1995 or so. Nowadays, attending university and getting myself an education is one of the things of main importance to me. I want to say a 'hi 'n' hello' then to the retired members as well as to the still active members of my old group TALENT (To Boo: Keep it up!:)), and of course some accomplishments to my old partner in crime, El Loco: I'll hope there'll be more productions of newer date awaiting us in the future, old timer. ;) And finally I want to thank Crown of CRB for this interview. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview is ©opyrighted in 2001 by crown of cryptoburners ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
