But the games led me into the (more interesting) domain of graphics and music and into an understanding of the technical hardware. In an era of of emerging computer technology, the actual aesthetic and technical possibilities of games/demos were of course very exciting features. "Can all this really be done with this tiny machine?" A C-64. I played games. And got annoyed at the slow-paced and unreliable tape recorder.. While I was too untalented for doing either gfx or coding, my lack of talent was maybe less conspicuous in music. Or, as Hegel would have it, music is one of the highest forms of aesthetic articulations of the human Zeitgeist, harbouring near-messianic expressions, leading us toward the greatest heights of existence.. Noise-, Sound- and Protracker. I don't think I ever reached any goal worth speaking of music-wise. I don't particularly fancy the music I did at the time. There were much better and naturally gifted musicians around, chiefly Uncle Tom, Walkman, Bruno, Mantronix and Firefox. I don't remember. My repression mechanisms must be quite efficient.. Highly important! Music in general can have such a profound impact - creating inexplicable and unforgettable states of joy, melancholy, etc. So, given the right music to accompany a demo/game, the impression it gives the viewer/player can be substantially boosted. Too seldom unfortunately. But I'm still into music: I play the percussion in a Gypsy/Klezmer band (see, www.kvartettraktor.tk - there's music samples there). And I've been playing in a rock/noise band with some friends here in Uppsala for the past 10 years or so. (Since we haven't made it after playing together for so long, the conclusion concerning our quality shouldn't be too difficult to draw.) Recently though, I've just bought music equipment to my computer and have taken some initial, faltering steps in this field.. Uhm? You mean the actual technical formats, or what? I suppose the sound quality is ok. But I've never really been interested in the technological aspects of music-making. Besides, I like noise and blurry soundscapes. On Amiga? My memories are quite vague.. but "Poseidon" and "Savannah" by Uncle Tom are two masterpieces. And, almost all of Bruno's and Walkman's tunes too. Nope. Radiohead (their melancholy is the best), Einstürzende Neubauten, Sigur Rós, New Order/Joy Division, Kraftwerk, The Smiths (as always), Nick Cave (prior to "The Boatman's call"), Stina Nordenstam, Velvet Underground, Swans, Nick Drake and Tindersticks. And too many others.. In addition to bands, I listen to classical music quite a lot: Sjostakovitj, Bartok, Ravel, Arvo Pärt and Bach primarily. Also, modern minimalist music such as: Steve Reich, John Adams and Philip Glass. A lot! It was great realising that I could actually make music, that I could make disparate parts fit together in a whole. And realising that composing skills were something that could actually improve.. Above all perhaps, the great people I met, some of whom I'm still in contact with, cheifly Mantronix, Facet/Anarchy (NL) and the "Paris-gang" of Rebels (Fred, Fab, Alex and Pierre). Also, I had a great time visiting Rush, Dan and Nuke /Anarchy in Derby, UK, while backpacking through Europe back in 1992. No, does it still exist? Bruno, Firefox and 4-Mat (whom I've lost contact with): if you read this, it'd be great if you felt like dropping me a line! |
