Quite old, i know, but it worked near my parents, and then I got my first pc. A 386/25 mhz, with 2mb ram and a HUGE 40mb hard disk. I guess it came just for the necessity to type in something... Besides my trusty 486 (which was the upgrade from that first 386), which is somewhere in my parents house, I have with me another 486 (thanks go to Jeroen Tel, for the motherboard) and a Pentium120 - this is my actual PC. I guess because I AM a musician in real life. I study choir conducting, and studied previously piano, singing and composing. And, of course, because musicians are the coolest in the demoscene. I worked with Scream Tracker 3 - and then Impulse Tracker, which I still use today - but also with Cool Edit (for composing, yes :) I'm usually quite satisfied with my tunes, but some months later I think they suck a bit. That didn't happend though with Imposing, which was supposed to be a MC6 entrie, but I wrote wrongly the filename... Actually, there isn't. Even the very bad ones that i never released were somehow examples of what I don't want to do. Each one of them were good learning experiences. Vital. Actually, there is no such thing like a demo without music. Even silence is part of the composition. :) But, seriously, the roll of the music is very important, it keeps the audience interested and, sometimes, amazed! Take, for instance, 2nd Reality, or Dope! Without music, they lose half of the importance in the demoscene's history. I am composing for both professional and leisure purposes. I don't make a cent with tracking, but I use sometimes my compositions in theatre or dance pieces, and if they get sold, then I get something :) I think that nowadays there are such easy-to-use and powerful programs and machines, that almost anybody can make some sound. "Some", I still think that to make whatever kind of music there are certain skills that you must build first. I believe it's very much a question of taste and styles, and I really enjoy all those mp3's I download, but in fact there is nothing like those old chiptunes... 0ldsch00l f0r3v3r! :) Wave's Pools of Poison, 911, Chaos Control and others, Dope's soundtrack, Dune's Last Train, Virt's Classical Favorites (1 and 2), Distance's Southern Pacific - or is it Dune's? :) - and all those s3m's that I have in my 486 HD. Oh yes! The problem is that is hard to get a PC with good soundboard, music programs and a burner. Homemade, of course, I don't have any plans to make my music commercial. Queen (since always!), Jamiroquai, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Gabriel O Pensador, Bjork, Pink Floyd, and many many MANY others. I guess that it was the origin of all this. Without amiga/c64 I wouldn't even think about digital art in the same broad way I think now. I played for hours in amiga when I was quite young, and I was always so impressed with the quality of the grafics and the music, when comparing to my 486! I was so jealous at my friends that owed one amiga! Kind of. I'm a founding member of the group where I am at, and I was busy with the organization of some demoparties in Portugal. This year we released one demo and one music disk. Not much, I would say, but still... I want to say to the public that I'm oldskool because 1) I enjoy and 2) I don't have any other option! I'm poor and my PC is a 486... I'd like to thank Rui Monteiro, Paulo Cadavez and Jeroen Tel for showing me the ways of the scene and for the inspiration. THANK YOU! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- please note: this interview is ©opyrighted in 2002 by crown of cryptoburners ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
